Birkirkara pairs consolidate top positions

Day 3 of the Doubles Individual League was played last Wednesday at Cottonera Sports Complex.

Men's Doubles Div. 1

In the Men's section Birkirkara pair Aldo Polidano/Stefan Salomone consolidated their top position with hard-fought close wins over their nearest opponents namely David Cole/Kenneth Vella of Paola Wolves 21-16, 21-18 and clubmates Stephen Ferrante/Samuel Cali 21-16, 21-19. With these wins the Birkirkara pair stand a good chance of winning the league as they are the favourites of winning the remaining matches.

Club pair Stephen & Samuel continued to show their recent improvement with an easy win over Paola Wolves pair Edmond & Rodney Abela 21-8,21-12.

Albert Bezzina/Ivan Salomone could only take a point from the two matches played in a close draw against clubmates Arif Rochman/Ragu Sellakkannu 21-16, 17-21; they then lost their second match against experienced Paola pair David Cole/Kenneth Vella 21-10, 21-4.

Arif & Ragu were beaten by Paola pair Edmond & Rodney Abela in a close match 21-18, 21-15 to remain in bottom position.

Ladies' Doubles Div. 1

In the Ladies' section Birkirkara pair Maria Borg/Fiorella M. Sadowski humbled their direct rivals - Paola Wolves pair Catriona & Domenique Francica - winning 21-9, 21-2, thus consolidating their top position.

Marica Micallef/Katrina Vella, another Birkirkara pair, had a good day as they won both their matches, beating Shuttles pair Carmen Spiteri/Grace Saliba 21-11, 21-11 and clubmates Marija Attard/Klara O'Berg 21-8, 21-8. Had they not forfeited 4 points in their previous 2 matches because of Katriona's unavoidable absence, they could be challenging for the honours.

The Individual League will take a rest next week, when the Junior National Championships will be played. The next Individual League fixtures will be on 9th November.
