Steve and Maria show off on the Individual Singles debut

Last Wednesday saw the start of the Individuals Singles event. This year the participants are divided into 6 divisions. A number of Birkirkara players were called to action on this first day of this competition, with Steve and Maria achieving the best results on the day.

In the 1st Division, Stephen Ferrante had to play against Kenneth Vella, one of the league contenders. Throughout the match Steve managed to show on court all the work he has been putting into training. He rallied against the more fancied opponent on an equal level and bagged in the first set 21-18. The second set was similarly balanced. Steve maintained his concentration but committed a number of unforced errors which proved decisive, and eventually lost the second set 21-17.

Maria Borg put on a great show as she won both her matches to top the 3rd Division table. She initially cruised past the opposition put on by Domenique Francica 21-11, 21-8. Her second match was more challenging as she faced one of the division favourites, Chris Spiteri. Maria was determined to claim the points and after tightly claiming the first set 21-18, she confidently 1bagged in the second 21-10.

In the remaining matches Ragu did his best to upset rivals David Cole and Kenneth Vella. He nevertheless had to go home without a point after losing his matches 21-17, 21-9 and 21-13, 21-14 respectively. On the other hand, Fiorella struggled to find her true form as she first lost against Chris Spiteri 11-21, 17-21, and then only drew against Domenique Francica 21-7, 18-21.

The Individual League will resume on the 7th December with the Men's Doubles were Aldo Polidano and Stefan Salomone have the chance to bring home the second title of this season for Birkirkara.
