Birkirkara start 2012 on a high note

Mixed League Div. 1

It was a positive day for club pairs Stefan Salomone/Fiorella M. Sadowski and Aldo Polidano/Maria Borg who both obtained maximum points from their 2 matches played. On the other hand the thgird pair of our club, Albert Bezzina/Marica Micallef, lost both their matches against their clubmates.

The first pair were in good form as they had the upper hand over clubmates Albert/Marica 21-11, 21-7 and then went on to beat Paola Wolves pair Edmond Abela/Cristina Mifsud 21-6, 21-13. With the 4 points gained and with Paola Wolves pair David Cole/Catriona Francica dropping a point, Stefan/Fiorella are now in second place, only 1 point below leaders Cole/Francica against whom they will play next week.

Aldo/Maria also won 4 points to consolidate their third position in the table. They first defeated direct rivals Kenneth Vella/Domenique Francica of Paola Wolves, 21-13, 21-16. In their second match, the Birkirkara pair had to struggle to go past Albert/Marica 21-19, 21-9.

Mixed League Div. 2

This week so the start of this division with 2 pairs representing our club - Stephen Ferrante/Katerina Vella and Samuel Cali/Klara O'Berg.

Stephen/Katerina began their campaign on a positive note winning their matches against the Paola Wolves’ opposition. In the first match they beat Rodney Abela/Anna Galea 21-11, 21-16. In their second match against Patrick Cassar/Tiziana Mifsud, the Birkirkara pair easily bagged the first set 21-8, but had to work hard to maintain their perfect start winning the second set 22-20.

On the other hand, Samuel/Klara did not perform up to the expecations. The young duo had a shaky start and dropped the first set against Patrick Cassar/Tiziana Mifsud 14/21. However, they slowly found rhythm and pace in their match and easily won the second set 21-7. Everyone expected them to maintain this rhytm, and yet they lost their second match against the more experience Rodney Abela/Anna Galea 21-19, 21-16 in a balanced match. The Birkirkara pair fought hard for every point but their inconsistent play and silly mistakes cost them the match.
