Aldo and Stefan close in on Doubles title

The Doubles League resumed on Wednesday with matches from the Men's and Ladies Leagues.

In the Men's League Birkirkara pair Stefan Salomone/Aldo Polidano obtained another 3 points to edge closer to winning the Doubles League. In the first match they beat easily clubmates Arif Rochman / Raguram Sellakkannu 21/4, 21/9. The second match was against nearest title contenders Kenneth Vella / David Cole of Paola Wolves. Since they lost the first round match, the Paolites pair needed a win to keep their title hopes alive. On the other hand, a win from Aldo and Stefan would have sealed the title in favour of the Birkrikara pair. The Birkirkara duo played well and seemed to control the match in the first set notwithstanding the close 21-17 score. However in the second set, David and Kenneth fought back and forced Aldo and Stefan to a series of unforced errors which cost them the second set, 21-19.

In other matches Arif / Raguram beat clubmates Albert Bezzina / Ivan Salomone 21/11, 21/15. Albert / Ivan won a point (with some more attention they could have won two) against Paola Wolves pair Rodney / Edmond Abela 21/19, 17/21.

Stephen Ferrante / Samuel Cali were not in their usual mood and lost both their matches against Paola Wolves opposition: vs Kenneth / David 21-10, 21-19 and vs Edmond / Rodney 21-15, 23-21. These matches have cost them the chance for the runner-up spot.

In the only match of the Ladies Doubles League Maria Borg / Fiorella Sadowski beat Paola Wolves pair Catriona and Domenique Francica 21/16, 21-15. Although winning the game the Birkirkara pair gave away points on unforced errors.
