Disappointing results in the Junior Championships

Our junior players participated in the National Junior Championships 2011 held on 1st & 2nd November. All our club junior players taking part did their best (for some it was their first competitive experience), and they must be commended for their effort. However a special word of mention should go to Lisa Formosa, Atlanta Cochrane and Luigi Grech who obtained the best results of the competition. They showed a marked improvement and, with more dedication and sagrifice they can reap better results in the future.

In the under 13 competition Luigi Grech obtained the best result getting through to the semi finals in the singles competition where he lost to the more experienced Nigel De Gaetano. Kain Gatt lost in the first round to Luigi, whilst young Matthew Galea had the same fate when he lost to Nigel De Gaetano also in the first round.

In the doubles competition Luigi was partnered by Nigel Degaetano and obtained the runner-up berth.

Lisa Formosa made her way to the final of the under 16 singles with wins over Sarah Debono (QF) and clubmate Atlanta Cochrane (SF); she then lost the final 21-16, 21-13. Before losing her match against Lisa, Sarah Debono won her first round match against Sarah Ann Mallia in a 3-set thriller. Sarah had to come back from an intial upset after losing the first set 21-17, winning the second and decisive sets 24-22, 21-6. Atlanta won her quarter final match before losing to Lisa in the semi final. Clarissa Grech lost her first round match against Jacqueline Grech Licari.

In the only under 16 girls' doubles match played Lisa/Atlanta defeated clubmates Clarissa/Sarah 21-11, 21-11. The competition will be continued on a later date.

Kain Gatt/Luigi Grech lost in the first round of the under 16 doubles competition.

Likewise Luigi/Petra Grech and Kain Gatt/Clarissa Grech lost in the semi finals of the under 16 mixed competition.

In the under 19 singles Atlanta lost to Lisa in the quarter finals; the latter lost her semi final match against the more experienced Domenique Francica.

In the doubles sisters Petra/Clarissa Grech lost in the semi finals to the competition favourites Francica sisters. Atlanta/Lisa progressed to the final after a walk-over but then lost to the Francica sisters.

In the under 19 mixed our young pairs Kain Gatt/Clarissa Grech and Luigi/Petra Grech found it tough against the more experienced competition and lost in the first round.

We hope that the players learn from this experience and that this year will serve them to improve their performances in the near future.
